Trend Micro Malware Detection Test Video - Hands-On Test

If you would like to see how Trend Micro Maximum Security takes on zero-day malware, then watch this video of our hands-on test performed in-house.

If there is more information about Trend Micro you'd like to acquaint yourself with, then read our expert Trend Micro review with details about the products, other hands-on tests, and images.

To carry out the test, I select a honeypot folder with 1,000 dormant malware files from ISP gateways.

This test does NOT investigate the antivirus software's ability to detect and remove active malicious files; rather it looks to see how Trend Micro can detect and then delete or quarantine dormant infected files so as to curb any infection on a system.

This video, however, does include a discussion on the different types of malware and infection methods and how to look out for them.

If the latter does not really interest you in this video, you can jump over to 5:32 to get straight to the hands-on test.

The score for this test does not only apply to Trend Micro Maximum Security; all the other products by the vendor have the same core antivirus engine, so you can use the score as a general indication.

Before I test the software, I need to install the latest version of the antivirus software on a clean Windows 10 OS install.

All hands-on tests performed in-house are performed on the same dedicated standalone PC so that all results are consistent and comparable.

I then have to run an update on the antivirus engine and definition in order for Trend Micro's signature database with all the MD5 signatures to update.

This database is what the antivirus software can compare the malware to because it contains thousands of MD5 strings and other hashes of malware.

Trend Micro didn't perform so well in this test, which was surprising for such a good antivirus vendor with top online security features.

73% is very average for a malware detection score.
