Trend Micro is a force to be reckoned with in the world of internet security protection.
This company recruits top digital security experts to create software that ensures the safety of all your online information, whether it's on a PC, mobile, on your network, in the cloud, at home, at work, or in the data center.
You can expect strong malware detection and privacy features against phishing, top ransomware protection specialized for new emerging threats, and a very accurate spam filter.
This Trend Micro review will outline all the security packages, test results on the performance of the software, and other informative details.
Trend Micro offers free trials for all its home user and small business packages, for PCs, Mac, and mobile devices, while some of the larger enterprise products come with free trials.
If you already paid for a product, you can rest assured that there is a 30-day money-back guarantee on all the products should you not be satisfied for some reason, and this is for both online and retail purchases. If a retail outlet doesn't want to refund you, you can return the product to Trend Micro within 30 days from the purchase date with a receipt. You will receive all your money back less handling and shipping fees.
Trend Micro is a top competitor in internet security and antivirus protection, with top products for cloud security, business content security, and server security.
The technology powering this internet security is run by over 1200 expert and is called Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network™; this is a global threat intelligence network that is on data watch around the clock, ensuring that all its customers are protected. The objective is for threats to be detected as soon as they emerge, so they can be clearly identified and wiped out before they harm any systems. The cloud security is notified of emerging threats so that all the products and services are protected for home users and businesses across the world.
Trend Micro was founded in the U.S. in 1988 with headquarters in Las Colinas Irving, Texas. Today there are also headquarters and offices around the globe with 5258 employees.
What caught my attention right away was that all the packages include ransomware protection. This isn't commonplace and I think this is one reason why Trend Micro deserves a thumbs up!
Each of the products include an antivirus engine, privacy protection, anti-phishing, and a spam filter. This means that you're good to go in terms of the essential internet security and antivirus protection for all the products.
Each product runs smoothly on Windows version XP all the way to 10.
As you can see, the more you pay, the more extra features you get, such as parental control, a password manager, and more.
It is worth noting that the Maximum Security product is actually cheaper than the Internet Security, so it is definitely worth your buck to invest in the former package as it comes with even more features.
Trend Micro takes all devices into consideration: Mac, Android, and iOS are covered for the top products, and there is a separate Mac Antivirus product which will be discussed in this review.
One more thing to note is that Trend Micro doesn't provide a firewall. The only thing I noticed is what they term a firewall booster, but I couldn't put it to the test or use it.
So, have a sneak peak with this brilliant, self-explanatory format.
I recommend subscribing to Maximum Security 10 because the price difference is ever so slight and you get a ton of extra features, compatibility with a multitude of operating systems, and 24/7 technical support.
Trend Micro steps up to the challenge in providing stellar business packages for all devices in order to protect business data and systems.
The Worry-Free packages are on offer for smaller business for PCs and Macs with cloud-based protection, mail server protection, and a pleasant interface.
For enterprises, they up the ante with different software suited to different needs with packages such as Deep Security, Deep Discovery, and more. These innovate products guard intellectual property and identify threats immediately in order to protect whole systems and servers.
I'd say all businesses, big or small, will be in excellent hands with this line of security products.
Now it's time to see what makes Trend Micro a fantastic internet security protection software. I will review each of the key features offered in the product packages.
Every single package comes with the scanner, which is one of the most important, if not the most important feature of antivirus protection.
The scanner forms the "center piece" of the user interface which you can press at any time. When the scan is complete and you're protected, you will see a check mark with the word "protected" next to it.
You have the choice to run a quick scan or a full scan, or you can opt for the custom scan for individual drives which you can choose from the arrow button on the scanner any time.
The default time is for the scan button to run one minute scans.
You can scan one file at a time but not one folder at a time; all you have to do is right-click on the file in Windows Explorer.
A downfall of this software is that there doesn't seem to be a gaming mode for the scanning to take place in the background while you are busy with your device, and I did notice that the performance of the computer was slightly affected while the scanner runs - this means that system slows down.
I ran the scans through our own lab tests which uses the same PC for all the scans. This computer runs on a Windows 10 64-bit installation with all the latest Windows updates installed.
Our Computer hardware: 4GB RAM, Intel Core i7 CPU 3.20 GHz
TrendMicro was tested rigorously over the years by several certified testing labs, and the results are laid out before you:
Take a few moments to watch this video on Trend Micro Maximum Security's zero-day malware detection capabilities.
It scored 73% in this in-house test.
We demonstrate how we arrive at this average score along with explanations on malware types and infection methods.
For our own test, I measured the computer's recourse use in 3 states: Idle with no antivirus installation, with an idle instance of Trend Micro running in the background, and during a full scan of Trend Micro.
I measured the CPU, RAM and hard disk usage in all three states, and here are the results:
To sum things up, our performance score for Trend Micro in our hand's on test is 85%. To get a taste of where the other antivirus providers stand of the playing field, check our antivirus comparison.
This is a real threat to us all, both home users and businesses.
Trend Micro upholds its promise of top internet security because it offers anti-ransomware protection for all its packages, except for the Antivirus for Mac.
Wait, there's more!
There are two mechanisms against both types of ransomware, namely screen-locking and file encryption.
For the former, the tool bypasses the mechanism that locks the screen without needing to reboot the PC in Safe Mode - this tool also comes for free!
For encryption ransomware,Trend Micro's paid products combat it with a tool that monitors the system for any ransomware attempts, and it backs up the files that are targeted before any encryption can take place. The tool also stops the process of encryption from happening if there is any suspicious encryption software.
This works differently from Bitdefender's tool against ransomware which locks down user-designated files beforehand so they can't be encrypted.
Trend Micro software's antivirus engine not only hunts down issues and threats in the system's hard drive and memory, it also searches for scam programs with the use of a real-time behavioral analysis which runs on the device.
The protection is 100% and catches zero-day malware with this behavioral analysis as well as traditional malware-detection matching. The ability of the software to catch only threats and not normal programs and software is also very strong in that there were no false positives when I tested out the product.
This tool works much like the anti-malware mechanism, which prevents users from visiting websites riddled with malware.
Trend Micro provides an alert warning page so that you are aware that the URL of the website you are about to visit may be a phishing site on which your personal credentials could be stolen.
This feature works for social media pages and all internet addresses if need be.
This is an awesome feature that everyone gets to enjoy with all the products.
The tool is designed to integrate Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, and Windows Live Mail. What it does is that it automatically diverts spam emails from your Exchange mail account or POP3 into a special folder.
If you have another email client, you can define rules to instruct what needs to occur to your POP3 messages marked as spam mail by the spam filter.
You can sleep peacefully at night knowing that you can take charge of what your children see and do with the parental control feature.
You can exclude whole categories, such as adult and sexually explicit websites, and anything else you aren't comfortable with them being exposed to with a manual setting. Alternatively, you can enter an age range and let Trend Micro do all the work for you.
There is also the password-protected controls that you can use to set up a specific schedule of gaming use and for when your kids browse online.
Enjoy the luxury of full privacy and theft detection. The products have a privacy web-browser scanner which searches your instant messaging and social media accounts settings to detect ways that could be compromising your personal information.
In order for this scanner to work, you need to enable an add-on or extension for Chrome, Firefox or Explorer.
There is also the anti-theft prevention tool that lets you place a sequence of characters, such as your phone number, address, or credit card number; if some kind of web connection attempts to steal the character sequence, the transaction will immediately be blocked.
This is not usually a feature you will find in basic packages with other antivirus software.
This is another feature that mid-range products do not usually offer, but with Trend Micro, you can find this with the Internet Security package and up.
What happens is that after a scan, whether quick or full, there is a system-optimization procedure that automatically takes place. The optimization rearranges the startup files of the system, deletes unnecessary and duplicate files, and checks for Registry issues.
The check takes a few seconds and it checks the overall health of the PC, identifies security holes, cuts the time of the system startup, and recovers disk space.
How about a nifty file shredder to get rid of those unwanted files?
Well, Trend Micro has your back with the secure erase file shredder.
This guy ensures that a file you "shred" will become permanently unreadable so no one can access it again.
This is a helpful tool which works on PCs, Macs, Android, and iOS devices, and you can use it on as many of these devices as you wish.
Use this to manage all your login IDs, including passwords and user names in one secure place, so that you only need to remember 1 password.
This product was previously known as the Internet Security for Mac.
For those of you with Macs that want to use Trend Micro, this package protects your device and your privacy from online malware, dangerous websites, as well as identify thieves with anti-theft tools.
The one major drawback of this software is that it doesn't include anti-ransomware like all the other packages do.
Trend Micro's Premium Security, Maximum Security packages, and all the business packages cater for Android devices.
Most of the tools are designed to work on Android as well, with some even dedicated to Android, such as the Longevity for Android which is a free tool with easy settings and advanced warnings. It is a great app that allows you to extend your mobile phone's battery life.
The same goes for iOS when it comes to packages and tools, as mentioned above. There is a free tool called the Smart Surfing for iPhone which lets you surf the web safely on any iOS device.
There are tons of other free tools to choose from for both home users and businesses.
It's a "what you see is what you get" kind of user interface with everything you need to know and see on the main page.
In gray, green, and red, Trend Micro boasts the central scan feature and check mark in the center to let you know if there is a scan in progress, and if you're protected.
The scan feature leads to a link where you can adjust and choose all your protection options, and where the intrusion reports are located - these inform you about your machine and all devices protected by Trend Micro at large.
There is a nice touch to the user experience with elements that move around in a bouncing motion when you hover over them. This seems to slow down the response by a few seconds.
There's even more to impress with the setting for the background image which you can replace with any of the 9 built-in selections, or you can place an image of your liking.
Note: It is easy to locate all the elements that you need but beware of the auto-renewal button. By default, the paid subscriptions have an automatic renewal feature every year. If you do not want this to occur, you need to turn it off during the installation process.
Lastly, Trend Micro's Smart Protection network appears on the interface; this software flags new online threats while monitoring performance and malware alerts from your computer.
Trend Micro security works on all devices, with packages for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
The system requirements for PC to be on the safe side you need at least an Intel x86 processor, 1.5GHz (or equivalent), and 2GB of RAM, Windows versions 7 or later, and at least 1GB of available disk space.
For those who opt for Mac, you need an Intel Core processor, which needs to be verified for your particular Mac OS, 256MB of RAM, 64 MB of free disk space, as well as OS X v10.6.8 or later versions.
The iOS versions need to be 6.0 or newer.
For Android users version 2.3 and all those after are compatible with Trend Micro's software.
It is pretty easy to see when and where to get help from Trend Micro.
Home and business users are provided with different links, numbers, and knowledge bases for general customer service and technical support.
Before you call, there are knowledge-base sources for searches, in the form of FAQs, or there is a discussion board. You can also submit a ticket online or contact via phone or live chat.
On the downside:
When you install a package, you are encouraged to pay more for the Premium Service Plans which give you access to 24/7 customer care. If not, you will get support from Monday-Friday from 5a.m.- 8p.m. PST.
Trend Micro has impressive accolades when it comes to awards and certificates.
It is no secret that AV-Test isn't the easiest IT Security Institute to impress, and Trend Micro have come out strong with two top product certificates awarded by them for 2016.
Other top achievements the company has received are the U.S. Army Certificate of Networthiness which was awarded for the Micro Deep Security product, an award for threat detection by PC Security Labs, NSS Labs named them the most effective breach detection system in 2015, and more.
I can say without a doubt that if you decide to invest in Trend Micro, you will be making a great decision.
For extremely competitive prices, you are guaranteed features that not many other antivirus providers offer with their basic packages. You can feel secure with an advanced antivirus engine including anti-ransomware protection.
All major devices are compatible with their products, and there are great features to enjoy from all their products.
I would definitely consider Trend Micro if top internet security protection is a priority for you.
Trend Micro Internet Security does solid work when it comes to malware and ransomware protection.
The advantage of their software is that it is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS so that everyone can get a slice of a top internet security protection cake.
The downside is that it the fast scanner seems to bear the brunt from the heavy impact on the system during the scans which slows down the device; however, in saying that, you can expect ransomware protection, which a lot of the other providers don't have built-in to their standard packages, there are excellent privacy tools, and the file shredder.
The only things I can really pick at are the tactic to upgrade to Premium Service Plans because of something like customer care, that there is no firewall, no gaming mode, and the fact that the automatic subscription renewal can only be adjusted during installation.
Overall, Trend Micro does a great job with inexpensive packages that cover up to 3 devices, and up to 5 for Premium protection which isn't that much more expensive.
We promise to only send really good deals and important updates. No spam.
