With a sleek and easy interface as well as an easy installation, Baidu Antivirus provides a great first impression!
However, upon closer inspection, I wouldn't place my faith in them especially when there are so many great antivirus providers out there.
Baidu Antivirus 2015 Dashboard
This review will outline some of the good aspects of this free Chinese antivirus software, but I will also explain why it is ultimately not the way to go for a top antivirus choice
It's not such a big surprise seeing that I conclude the same for Tencentand 360 Total Security (Qihoo), all Chinese companies. Qihoo was accused of and penalized for cheating in independent antivirus lab tests. This company then pointed fingers at Baidu and Tencent for doing the same, but it was established by the test labs that despite the fact that the antivirus providers included flags in their products, it did not significantly change the product behavior.
Baidu, Inc., one of the biggest Internet companies in the world, is a Chinese web services company that came about in January, 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Zu.
The company is headquartered in the Haidian District of Beijing at the Baidu Campus.
The company's web services includes the biggest Chinese search engine provider for images, audio files, and websites. Baidu also provides a discussion forum based on keywords, as well as 57 search and community services, such as Baidu Baike - an online encyclopedia.
Baidu Antivirus is part and parcel of the company's expertise, and it is available for users worldwide. This software offers proactive defense against viruses, Trojans, worms, and other malware infections as well as file and download protection, USB protection, browser protections, and other Internet security features.
Key Points about Baidu
Biadu do need to get moving with the times. The only antivirus product is the free Baidu Antivirus 2015 cloud-based internet security version. The software provides scans and real-time protection.
Baidu's antivirus engine is powered by the company's own software along with Avira's antivirus engine. The Avira engine is activated by default for scanning but not for real-time protection.
Quick and easy installation.
System Requirements: Windows XP or later, 233 MHz or faster processor, 256 MB of RAM, and 94.7 MB of free disk space.
A initial system scan will take about an hour, while a repeat scan can take around 40 minutes. This could be because of the two scanning engines and because Baidu re-scans known safe files.
The software provides good malware blocking and automatic scans for downloaded files. Every time a file is downloaded, Baidu sends a pop-up notification to announce that a scan is in progress. These scans take very long though; even a file of 100KB requires several minutes. One issue with Baidu is that these scans actively report files to be safe, which for me, is worse than simply not detecting malicious files.
Baidu's anti-phishing protection is terrible, reason enough not to choose this product. In the Protection Settings, there is a setting labeled "Anti-Phishing" with a description which reads: "Prevent malice activities and Internet fraud". This protection does prevent access to some fraudulent sites, but most of the phishing websites sail right past this supposed protective shield. The worst part is that the built-in phishing protection featured on Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer all outperform Baidu. The bottom line is that you cannot rely on Baidu for phishing protection which is a huge problem with the amount of phishing threats out there.
Baidu's interface boasts a sleek and simple layout with three big buttons on the main window which launch quick, full, and custom scans. Users can slide the window to the right for settings including protection, Internet activity, and privacy. When the user slides to the left, he/she can lock the homepage against malicious activities or submit the file to the Cloud File Scanner. There is also an option to fill in translations in other languages and to submit them for inclusion on Baidu's website. Baidu also offers a number of skins for the dashboard background, including sci-fi and holiday themes.
The interface has a section called the Toolbox page which has ten security tools of varying efficacy. There is the Malicious Plug-in Cleaner, System Repair, Network Traffic Monitor, and Browser Protection. It isn't clear why the malicious plug-in cleaner isn't part of the full malware scanner. The Network monitor only provides a real-time view of network traffic for those who cannot interpret it themselves; in other words, there isn't much to it. The System Repair search for and fix configuration problems. A risk-taker can experiment with potentially-dangerous files by placing them in the Sandbox.
Baidu can safeguard a user's selection of a homepage and a default browser, but this means the user cannot change it him/herself either. This isn't too bad because a user can launch his/her preferred browser in the private mode which isolates the browser from other processes and wipes away traces when the user quits.
There is also an Ad-Blocker with the function of speeding up loading time on the Internet by three times, but this does not really work and some ads pop up despite the blocker.
The File Shredder provides secure deletion. Users can check the box "Fully Prevent" to completely ensure that files will not be recovered.
Baidu provides the email, phone number, and fax number under Contact Us; however, there is no mention of working hours. Users also have the option to submit a feedback form, to sumbit suspicious files, and to participate in the online forum. There are also language packages with translated versions of the software and dashboard.
According to Baidu's website, the company has received awards from AV-Comparatives, VB100, West Coast Labs, virustotal, VirSCAN, Checkmark, and OPSWAT. Baidu is also a member of the Microsoft Active Protections Program.
To put it simply, don't use Baidu! Invest in one of the best antivirus providers. Sometimes paying takes you a long way, especially at such competitive prices. There are also other free antivirus packages that perform better than Baidu.
For those that still want to give it a go and find out for themselves, I'll leave you with the option to decide. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Baidu Antivirus 2015 provides a good first impression with an easy installation and attractive interface, but that's where it ends. Read where Baidu's antivirus software falls short at providing the top antivirus protection mechanisms and tools.
