Simplicity

The control panel of this software is quite easy to use, but it is important to know that they do not offer a quick scan; it's always "full scan."

In my test environment, a Full Scan Test on a clean installation of Windows 10 took 5:20 minutes.

Independent Virus Protection Test Scores

Looking at test results published by independent antivirus software testing labs over the years, we can see that AVG is not bad at all.

FatSecurity.com Home User Tests

Although these labs are very professional and comprehensive, I try to give the reader a clear picture so he/she can relate to the real day-to-day influence and performance toll of each antivirus product.

In all the tests, I use the same standalone computer hardware with a clean Windows 10 64 bit installation with all available updates applied to the Windows operation system.

I installed the product on a PC of 4GB RAM and intel Core 7 CPU running at 3.20 GHhz speed.

I checked for 3 parameters:

  1. CPU Usage
  2. Memory Usage
  3. Hard disk (read/write) usage

Then I monitored these parameters during several key moments:

  1. Clean windows to install without any software.
  2. Full antivirus installation following software updates and a computer reboot.
  3. During antivirus Full Scan processes.

You can clearly see a 5% increase in memory consumption!

In sum, I observed the CPU increase to 31%, RAM to 46%, and 2.2MB/s of hard disk use.

Home-User Test Score

When I compare AVG to other Antivirus software, I tested with a real-life home user test tool the final score is: 90%

System Requirements

AVG antivirus products work on any Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP SP3 operation systems.

The processor speed should be at least 1.5GHhz for the products to work properly.

If you want to install AVG to your PC, you need at least 512 MB of RAM, and the disk space needed for the AVG installation is 1.5 GB.

Additional Features and Tools

Besides for the antivirus engine, the packages have several additional tools:

  1. Encrypts and password-protects private files - Basically, it lets you encrypt private files and folders. The only way to open the content is by using a password.
  2. Anti-Spam - This stops your PC and files from receiving unsolicited email with porn-related offers, as well as email phishing attempts.
  3. Firewall - This will stop all unauthorized network communication with your device/PC.
  4. PC Optimization - This feature covers you with features such as: Hard disk defragmentation, automatic updates for optimal cleaning, Startup manager, disk cleaner, and removal of duplicate files for even more space.

Customer Support

AVG offers 24/7 premium tech support for any device via a 1-800 number in the U.S.

Certifications and Awards

AVG is certified by a variety of different independent institutes as a provider of antivirus software for multiple operating systems and devices, among them are the International Computer Security Association (ICSA), West Coast Labs and Checkmark Product Certification.

It received countless awards for both its free and paid products throughout the years, with the first ones awarded as early as 2004.

In 2016 they received the AV-Test Certified seal of approval.

Value for Money

Taking into account the excellent false positive and protection score, you get really good deal.

The only downside is that the excellent performance takes its toll on CPU resources.

The above, along with the full money back guarantee and attractive price, make AVG very good candidate.

My Conclusion

AVG offers strong and simple malware protection and scored high in both independent tests and our own Home Tests.

There are slight drawbacks to its performance on CPU resources, but overall this is a great antivirus product for those seeking an easy-to-use and simple-to-install product.
